The globe has a 13.4 inch acrylic sphere containing a detailed physical map along with unique properties showing earth's relation to the sun. The Marco Polo has a stainless steel base and strong plastic meridian with an additional horizontal ring surrounding the equator and separating the north and southern hemispheres. The horizontal ring is labeled with the 24 hours of the day. It can be used to tell what time of day it is anywhere in the world along with the sunrise and sunset time.
At the base of the entire unit there is a turning dial which has a notch for each day of the year. By turning that dial one can track the earth's 365 day path around the sun. There is a bright lighted spot that shines when the world globe is illuminated representing where the sun is in relation to the earth. As the dial turns the sun spot tracks the movement of our closest star over a year long period alternating between the Tropic of Cancer the Equator and the Tropic of Capricorn. When this model's internal light is activated half of the globe is illuminated representing the part of the world that is always lit in daylight by the sun. The other half of the globe remains dark representing the night side of Earth. In the dark half of the globe there are three rings by its edge designating the three twilight zones: civil nautical and astronomical.
