A flock of 14 Hummingbirds sipping floral nectar cover this unusual tile mosaic sphere. It is a smidge over 10" in diameter (32" circumference) which means it has a little over 330 square inches of surface area.  This is equal to a flat mosaic measuring about 24" x 14".  Incredible isn't it?  We just don't realize how much surface area is on a round ball!
This mosaic has been created on a hollow acrylic ball base and weighs about 5 lbs. It has been grouted with epoxy grout that will made it virtually maintenance free.  Also included is a custom tri-footed iron stand.

Handcrafted in our House of Whispering Firs studio, the ceramic tiles on this sphere are made by hand from clay. Making tiles for a sphere or curved surface brings on a whole new aspect of tile making.  The wet clay is cut in the desired shapes and formed to fit the curved contours of the ball then secured to the surface to dry.  This process may take a little longer but certainly makes very special tiles to incorporate into these unique gems.
After the clay has dried, it is kiln fired (bisqued).  The tiles are then individually glazed and kiln fired again.  Finally, each piece is  adhered to the ball and permanently grouted with an epoxy (no maintenance) based grout .
This decorative sphere would  make a wonderful statement in any home, office or retreat.

outdoor use with care

They should not be left outdoors, exposed to the elements, in areas of the country that experience harsh winter conditions with ice, snow and /or repeated freezing and thawing conditions.
