GermanWW2 German Calvary Colonel's Old Style White Summer Tunic (Weisser Rock alter Art)
This is an old style pre WW2 tunic that has the shoulder boards for a Colonel in the 17th Horse regiment - this style tunic and the 17th Horse Regiment were both disbanded in 1939 - it has all the hallmarks of an old style tunic as listed below : . Old Style White Tunic (Weisser Rock alter Art): the white tunic was permitted for optional wear by officers and officials within barracks and training areas, outside barracks only when riding, and on duty with troops when the unit wore fatigues or sport dress. The tunic was made of white cotton drill, and corresponded in cut and style to the old style tunic (Rock alter Art), but with the following differences: the collar was of the stand-up variety, measuring 4cm high and with slightly rounded front corners. It closed with hooks and eyes. No insignia were worn on the collar. Six button closure in the front (rarely also, eight buttons). Patched-on hip pockets with slanted upper edges and beveled lower corners, and with 1.5cm wide pleats. The lower edge was horizontal to the edge of the skirt, while the scalloped pocket flaps were slanted. According to previous Reichswehr regulations, it also had the inside hip pockets, slanted sewn-on flaps, as with the old-style tunics. All buttons were of bright silver, and detachable with split-rings in eyelets. Shoulder boards were of bright silver color, and of the sew-in or more commonly detachable by being slipped through an opening in the shoulder seam, and being held in place by a “wing” affixed to the base of the board. This pattern white tunic was termed “old style” tunic with the introduction of the new pattern tunic. No fixed wearing out period was established with the introduction of the new pattern, and it could still be worn under the circumstances stated above. with the walking-out dress with the informal dress uniform within the officer's mess, within the family, and at garden parties at sports events, tournaments, and horse races The fabric was made of white cotton fabric (German term – piquet or Pikee) or of similar cloth .. This all fits in with this being a pre war tunic as it bears a 17 on the shoulder straps - their were 18 horse regiments before the war . The German cavalry corps, which in wartime consisted of horse, bicycle, and motorcycle troops, contained 18 horse regiments. Disbanded at the outbreak of the war in 1939, they were reformed into divisional reconnaissance battalions, followed in 1943 by what is considered the rebirth of the German cavalry. Three regiments were reconstituted. Beautiful shoulder boards -  2 nice multi award ribbon bars -loops for 3 awards most likely a EK1, Wound Badge and another badge. Being a white tunic their is some staining (mostly minor and not noticeable) - inside the left pocket is a dagger hanging loop - this is 100% pre WW2 and a hard to find tunic - don't you wish this could talk - most of these officers were either used as recon units and became Panzer units.
